About product

Antennas of the FuG 220 Lichtenstein radar in 1:144 scale

The manufacturer describes the product as a photo-etched set of antennas for a German airborne radar. It is an add-on made of thin metal sheet, not a model of an aircraft: on a finished machine it replaces or fills out the antenna array on the nose. With this radar in particular the difference between plastic and etch is fundamental, because its antennas were large and at the same time made up of thin booms and dipoles. The set comes from the Czech manufacturer Brengun.

What the radar did

The FuG 220 Lichtenstein SN-2 was an improved version of the airborne radar of German night fighters, which the Luftwaffe began to introduce at the end of 1943. It worked on a lower frequency of about 90 megahertz and was therefore far harder to jam than earlier types. The price for that was size: the lower frequency called for a huge antenna array with eight dipoles, for which the name Hirschgeweih, meaning stag's antlers, came into use. The drag it caused slowed the machine by tens of kilometers an hour. The set was carried by the Messerschmitt Bf 110, Junkers Ju 88 and Heinkel He 219 night fighters.

Usage tips

Separate the parts with a scalpel, not by breaking them out, and flatten them between two smooth surfaces. Glue the booms with cyanoacrylate glue in small drops and keep both sides symmetrical as you do, because asymmetrical antlers show on a model at once. Degrease the etch before painting and give it a primer.

Who the set is for

  • builders of German night fighters in 1:144
  • modelers who want thin antennas instead of plastic ones
  • more experienced builders used to small etch
  • those interested in the equipment of night defense

This is an add-on for a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

An airborne radar of German night fighters introduced from the end of 1943. It worked at about 90 megahertz, so it was harder to jam.

The array of eight dipoles on the nose resembled stag's antlers. It was large and its drag slowed the machine down.

It is not. It is a photo-etched set of antennas that is glued onto a built model.

The manufacturer does not name a particular kit. The radar was carried by the Bf 110, Ju 88 and He 219 night fighters, so check the fit against the version of your machine.
