About product

Jerrycan rack for the Panzer III Ausf. M, Totenkopf, pattern 1, 1:35 scale

A resin detail accessory in 1:35 scale from the brand ELEFANT. It is not a tank kit but a separate frame for additional jerrycans, of the kind that Panzer III crews welded onto the hull themselves. The box designates it as pattern 1 and ties it to the machines of the 3rd SS Division Totenkopf from the fighting at Kharkov and Kursk in 1943. The contents of the package are not stated here.

The real subject

Jerrycan racks were no part of the production standard. They were made in the field from sheet metal, strip steel and straps, because crews on the Eastern Front were regularly short of range, and no two of them were the same. That is exactly why the manufacturer distinguishes the individual patterns according to surviving machines. The Ausf. M version was one of the last combat shapes of the Panzer III: it was built from October 1942 to February 1943 in a number of around 250, carried the long 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 gun and was the first to receive wading equipment, that is watertight covers for the openings under the turret and a rebuilt exhaust. The 3rd SS Division Totenkopf returned to the Eastern Front in February 1943 with Army Group South and fought in the Third Battle of Kharkov.

Building and painting tips

First rinse the parts in warm soapy water, so that the residue of the mold release agent disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, do not break them, and level the edges with a sanding sponge while protecting your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Spray the frame separately before gluing it onto the hull and then add the patina: a darker wash into the gaps, dry pigment on the lower edges and fine scuffs where the jerrycans rubbed against the metal.

Who the set is for

  • builders of German hardware of the Eastern Front in 1943
  • modelers who take the hull beyond the level of the base kit
  • more experienced modelers used to working with resin

The set holds add-on resin parts, not a whole tank. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a separate resin accessory, specifically a frame for jerrycans. You get the base kit of the Panzer III Ausf. M separately.

Jerrycan racks were welded up in the field and each one looked different. The manufacturer therefore offers several versions according to surviving machines; pattern 1 is one of them.

The box does not state that for this version. The version with eleven jerrycans is offered by the manufacturer separately.

Cyanoacrylate glue. Cement for plastic will not bond resin.
