About product

Jerrycan rack for the Panzer III Ausf. M, Totenkopf, pattern 2, 1:35 scale

A resin detail accessory in 1:35 scale from the brand ELEFANT. It is not a tank kit but the frame for additional jerrycans on its own, of the kind that Panzer III crews welded onto the rear of the hull. The box designates it as pattern 2 and ties it to the machines of the 3rd SS Division Totenkopf from the fighting at Kharkov and Kursk in 1943. The box does not state jerrycans for this version.

The real subject

The 3rd SS Division Totenkopf returned to the Eastern Front in February 1943 with Army Group South and joined the counterattack that won Kharkov back for the Germans in the spring of 1943. In July of the same year it covered the left flank of the 2nd SS Panzer Corps in Operation Citadel at Kursk. In both cases this meant an advance over long distances on broken roads, where range was what counted, and crews therefore had a frame for further jerrycans welded on. The racks were no part of the production standard: they were made in the field from sheet metal and strip steel and no two of them were the same, which is why the manufacturer distinguishes the individual patterns. The Ausf. M version was one of the last combat shapes of the Panzer III, was built from October 1942 to February 1943 in a number of around 250 and carried the 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 gun.

Building and painting tips

First rinse the parts in warm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw and level the edges with a sanding sponge while protecting your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Spray the frame separately; the thin straps deserve a shade of scuffed metal of their own. Then add a wash into the welds and dust pigment on the lower edges.

Who the set is for

  • builders of German hardware of the Eastern Front in 1943
  • modelers who already have the jerrycans and want the frame alone
  • more experienced modelers used to working with resin

The set holds add-on resin parts, not a whole tank. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The box does not state them for this version. The version with eleven jerrycans is offered by the manufacturer separately.

Jerrycan racks were welded up in the field and each one looked different. The manufacturer therefore offers several versions according to surviving machines; pattern 2 is one of them.

It is not. It is a resin accessory for the hull. You get the base kit of the Panzer III Ausf. M separately.

The crews welded it onto the rear of the hull. Spray it separately and glue it on with cyanoacrylate glue only after painting, as the joint will then be cleaner.
