About product

Jerrycan rack for the Panzer III Ausf. M, Totenkopf, pattern 3, 1:35 scale

A resin detail accessory in 1:35 scale from the brand ELEFANT. It is not a tank kit but a frame for additional jerrycans welded onto the hull, this time in the version that the box designates as pattern 3. The subject is the machines of the 3rd SS Division Totenkopf from the fighting at Kharkov and Kursk in 1943. The box does not state jerrycans for this version.

The real subject

Operation Citadel, launched in July 1943 at Kursk, was the last large German offensive in the east and the Panzer IIIs were no longer the main force in it - they served alongside Panzer IVs and Tigers and carried a large share of the routine work. The Ausf. M version was built from October 1942 to February 1943 in a number of around 250, had the 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 gun and wading equipment with watertight covers for the openings under the turret. It was in exactly this period that improvised frames for jerrycans appear on the hulls: they were made in the field from sheet metal and strip steel, each one differently, and the manufacturer therefore divides them into several patterns. At Kursk the 3rd SS Division Totenkopf covered the left flank of the 2nd SS Panzer Corps and was only redesignated a full Panzer division at the end of 1943, so the 1943 designation corresponds to a Panzergrenadier division.

Building and painting tips

Rinse the parts in warm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and level the edges while protecting your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Spray the frame separately and glue it onto the finished hull only after painting. Light dust in the gaps and a dark wash into the welds suit the summer machines at Kursk.

Who the set is for

  • builders of German hardware from the fighting at Kursk
  • modelers who build a machine from a particular photograph
  • more experienced modelers used to working with resin

The set holds add-on resin parts, not a whole tank. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a resin accessory for the hull, specifically a frame for additional jerrycans. You get the base kit separately.

In the shape of the frame. The racks were welded up in the field as needed, so they differ from machine to machine; the manufacturer divided them into several patterns according to surviving photographs.

The box does not state them for this version. The version with eleven jerrycans is offered by the manufacturer separately.

In Operation Citadel it was no longer the main force; it served alongside Panzer IVs and Tigers. The Ausf. M version with the 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 gun was its last combat shape.
