An Italian officer, Second World War is a 1:16 resin set from Royal Model. The seated figure comes together with furniture, so a small scene comes out of it.

This Royal Model item is not just the figure on its own. A table, a chair and a newspaper belong to the casting of the seated officer of the Italian army, so the customer is in effect buying a finished small scene. It is exactly the furniture that makes the difference: a large-format figure stood on a bare base looks torn out of context, whereas with furniture around it, it immediately gains a story and a definite place.
The Royal Italian Army entered the war with a uniform that looked different from the German or the British one: the gray-green shade called grigioverde, a different cut of the collar and rank markings on the cuffs or on the breast. An officer's uniform was, moreover, markedly better in quality than the kit of the rank and file, which on a model shows in a smoother hang of the cloth. The scene at a table with a newspaper points to a staff or rear-area setting, not to the front line.
Seated figures are tricky to build: try dry whether the figure really does seat on the chair and, if need be, level the area of the thighs with fine abrasive paper. Paint the furniture separately and glue it together only at the end, otherwise you will not reach the underside of the seat. Wood looks convincing after a base brown, an oil glaze drawn with a brush along the grain and a fine highlighting of the edges. Leave the paper of the newspaper grayish rather than snow-white.
The set is unpainted and unassembled; glue, primer and paints have to be obtained separately.
