About product

100 mm D-10S barrel for the Soviet SU-101 1:35 – a turned set from Aber

This turned metal barrel from the Polish maker Aber in 1:35 scale replaces the plastic barrel part of the Soviet SU-101 self-propelled gun. The metal part is machined on a lathe, it has no seam from the mold parting line and the muzzle is drilled out, so once painted it looks far more faithful than the plastic original. The set is an accessory to the kit and does not hold the model of the vehicle.

The real subject

The SU-101, also known under its project designation Uralmash-1, was a Soviet self-propelled gun developed at the end of the Second World War using components of the T-44 tank. Its unusual feature was a layout with the fighting compartment moved to the rear, which gave the vehicle a very compact silhouette. The armament was the 100 mm D-10S gun, that is the self-propelled version of the proven hundred, which also armed the SU-100 tank destroyers. The vehicle stayed at the prototype stage and never reached series production.

Building and painting tips

The turned barrel is fitted in place of the plastic part, which usually has to be cut off, and the hole in the mantlet or shield carefully opened out with a round file. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue or two-part epoxy, and on heavier parts it is worth reinforcing the joint. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer, otherwise the paint holds badly. We recommend blackening the muzzle and knocking back the inside to a matte finish; the outer surface takes light drybrushing with a metallic pigment and some wear at the muzzle.

FAQ

No. It is a turned metal barrel, that is a detail accessory. The base kit of the vehicle has to be obtained separately.

A Soviet self-propelled gun developed at the end of the Second World War using components of the T-44 tank, with the fighting compartment at the rear and a 100 mm gun. It stayed a prototype.

A turned barrel has no seam from the mold, it is perfectly straight, it has a properly circular cross section and a drilled muzzle. That does away with sanding and filling the joint.

It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy. Before painting, the metal has to be degreased and sprayed with a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.
