About product

The American M1 helmet in 1:35 scale, detail version

An accessory for a figure in 1:35 scale. The helmet is made in a basic and in a detail version, and this is the detail one. It is not a figure and not a kit: you get the helmet on its own, to be fitted on a head or laid loose in a scene, for example on a crate, on a gun mount or in the grass beside a seated figure.

The real subject

The American M1 helmet is built around a two-part construction. The outer steel shell with its smooth brim was worn over a separate inner liner, so it could be taken off on its own while the liner served as light headgear. The shape stayed in service for decades and, with small variations, turns up from the Second World War through to later conflicts, which makes the helmet a universal accessory for a wide range of figures.

Fitting, cleanup and painting

In 1:35 scale this is a very small part, so work with tweezers and over a surface the piece can be found on. Cut the casting residue off with a sharp knife or a fine saw and sand the area carefully. Then wash the casting in lukewarm water with detergent, so that no mold release agent is left on the surface. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and here a drop on the tip of a toothpick is enough. Before painting, go over it with a primer, ideally sprayed in a thin coat, because a heavy coat of paint would flood the engraving of the brim in this scale. A base shade, a wash under the brim and along the chin strap and a dry brush on the edge give the helmet depth. Pick out the straps in a lighter tone and seal the whole thing with a matte clear coat.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of 1:35 figures from the Second World War and from later periods
  • Dioramas with gear laid aside, where the helmet lies apart from the figure
  • Conversions of figures and replacement of the original headgear
  • Modelers who want to unify the gear across several figures

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a figure. The glue, the paints and a figure are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the detailed variant of the same helmet. Check the difference from the basic version on the packaging.

It is not. This is a separate accessory; the figure is bought on its own.

It can, if it is laid on heavily. Spray both the primer and the paint in thin coats and handle the shading with a wash rather than another coat of opaque paint.

The shape stayed in service for decades, so it can be used from the Second World War through to later periods. Judge the period from the rest of the figure's gear.
