Sheet metal boxes for the ammunition belts of the American heavy machine gun. The 1:35 Cal. 50 Ammo boxes accessory from Royal Model is a rewarding prop for dioramas.
Responsibility details are not available.
A sheet metal box with a hinged lid and a folding handle is among the most widespread items of the American army of all. Royal Model has worked it in 1:35 scale as small equipment for a scene.
An ammunition belt for a heavy machine gun fitted into the box, and the dimensions changed only slightly over decades, so the same box looks the same on a model from Normandy as on a present-day armored vehicle. It was carried on fenders, in baskets, under seats, and stacked into pyramids at firing positions. Once emptied, its second life began: it served for tools, for personal belongings, for spare parts, for the paperwork of a company commander. Soldiers adapted it, wrote on it in chalk and carried it with them for as long as it took the bottom to rust through. It is precisely this timelessness that makes the set an accessory usable across periods.
The lettering gives the most away. Apply stenciled markings in white or yellow paint with a fine brush and age them straight away, because undamaged lettering looks artificial. The lids do not all have to be closed; one open box with a hint of a belt inside brings a whole corner to life. A dark wash in the grooves and light rust on the edges and the lower surfaces will help.
The boxes are supplied unpainted; paints, decals and wash are not included in the package.
