A masking set for painting the road wheels of the Israeli Merkava Mk.4 main battle tank in 1:35 scale. The set contains no construction parts: the masks are stuck onto finished wheels and separate the rubber ring from the disc while you spray. It is cut for the Merkava Mk.4 kit from Meng, specifically TS-036.
The Merkava differs from most tanks in where it carries its engine: at the front. The running gear matches that, with the wheels held by suspension units mounted outside the hull rather than by torsion bars inside, and the whole mechanism hidden behind massive side skirts with chain aprons at the rear. You therefore see far less of the running gear than on an exposed carrier: what is left is the lower arc of the wheels and a narrow strip between the skirt and the track. The discs themselves are large, with a prominent rubber ring and a characteristic pressing in the disc, so where they are visible they are a dominant shape. That is exactly why they are worth taking seriously: modelers often count on the skirts hiding everything and then find themselves looking at a single exposed arc with a shaky rubber edge in the display case.
When only a part of the wheel is visible, and that part is in the shadow of the side skirts, a trap is waiting: a correctly mixed dark rubber shade disappears entirely in that shadow and the running gear merges into one black area. Choose a tone noticeably lighter than you would use on exposed running gear, a gray with a stronger light component, even with a hint of sand. In the shadow it looks exactly like rubber, and in daylight a little more sun-bleached, which does an Israeli vehicle no harm. Apply the paint in two thin coats; a third would only fill in the relief of the disc. Finish it matte and rule out gloss entirely, because in the shadow it would turn into unnatural highlights.
