About product

The Schertel-Sachsenberg torpedo hydrofoil boat in 1:35 scale - Mikromir

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:35 scale, the Mikromir part number 35-011 from the Ukrainian maker. Both the manufacturer and independent sellers list it as a German fast torpedo boat. It is important to realize what it is: a surface craft, not a submarine. According to the manufacturer the package holds plastic and a small photo-etched fret; check the extent on the box.

The real subject

Hanns von Schertel was a pioneer of hydrofoil craft and Gotthard Sachsenberg ran the yard in which his designs came about. From their cooperation came a range of German hydrofoil boats during the war, and this one belongs among the small combat types. The craft had a displacement not exceeding four and a half tons, was driven by a single engine of around four hundred horsepower and carried a single torpedo of 533 millimeter caliber. The sources give the speed as around forty knots, and it was precisely that which was the point of the design: while under way the hull lifted onto hydrofoils, the water resistance fell and a small boat gained a speed for which, with a conventional hull, it would have needed a far more powerful engine.

Building and painting tips

The hydrofoils and their struts are thin and carry the whole look of the model: dry-fit them, check the symmetry against the axis of the hull from both sides and only then glue. Fill and sand the seams of the hull, and glue the small photo-etch with cyanoacrylate glue only after spraying. On a water base plan the height of the hull above the surface in advance; in a display case without water a stand is needed, because the craft will not stand on its hydrofoils by itself.

Who the model is for

  • For modelers interested in German experimental designs of the Second World War
  • For builders of dioramas with a water surface and a craft under way

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
