A pre-cut masking set for painting the running gear of the Sd.Kfz.10 light half-track tractor and of the Sd.Kfz.250 armored personnel carrier derived from it. It covers the rubber parts of the wheels, so you can spray the rims and the discs in the vehicle color and the rubber stays dark. The set is cut for the kits of these vehicles from Dragon.
In masking terms a half-track is two different jobs in one model. At the front there is a steered axle with tires, that is a genuine automotive wheel with a tread, where the tire is separated from the rim and the line is visible both from outside and from inside through the openings in the disc. At the rear there is a tracked running gear with interleaved wheels whose outer row overlaps the inner one, so the rear tire bands are only partly reachable. One set therefore deals with two different shapes and two different diameters, and they must not be mixed up: a mask from the rear part will not fit a front tire and the other way round.
On interleaved wheels the mask has to be lifted out from between densely packed parts and easily catches on something. Paint and unmask the wheels separately, then, before you fit them onto the axles. If the paint peels as you lift the mask, there was usually no primer or the surface of the part was too smooth; taking the shine off gently with a very fine abrasive before priming improves adhesion considerably. Pull the mask away slowly and at a shallow angle rather than straight up, and preferably right after the paint has flashed off rather than after days of drying, when the adhesive holds most strongly. On the front tires work the other way round from what you are used to on tanks: mask the whole tire including the tread and paint the lighter rim, not the reverse.
Paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.
