About product

The heavy reconnaissance armored car Sd.Kfz. 231 on six wheels, 1:35

A detailing set from Royal Model for the earlier type of German heavy reconnaissance car. It completes the areas that tend to be simplified on a plastic kit and moves the finished model closer to the real subject. The vehicle is obtained separately.

A six-wheeler built on a truck chassis

The abbreviation 6-Rad distinguishes this type from the later and better-known eight-wheeled car with the same number. The earlier variant came about by modifying a production 6x4 truck chassis, onto which an angular armored hull with a rotating turret was set. The armament was a 20 mm KwK 30 automatic cannon and a coaxial machine gun. The car had a second driving position at the rear so that it could reverse at full speed, which was valued in reconnaissance. It was in service from the mid-1930s and went through the campaigns in Poland and in France, but its poor performance off the road soon pushed it aside in favor of the eight-wheeled successors.

Advice on building and painting

Finish and paint the chassis and the running gear before you seat the hull, otherwise the underside is hard to reach. Glue the small accessories with cyanoacrylate glue in small doses. The gray shade of early German vehicles looks better when, once it has dried, you play it with a fine dust pigment on the fenders and the wheels.

Who it suits

  • Anyone interested in reconnaissance vehicles from the start of the war
  • Builders who want to lift a model beyond its box state
  • Makers of dioramas from the campaigns of 1939 and 1940
  • Modelers with experience of small accessories

Only the add-on set is included, not the plastic armored car or paints.
