A set of masks for painting the wheels of the German Sd.Kfz. 251 armored half-track in 1:35 scale. The set is cut for kits from AFV Club. On a half-track you paint both the front wheels and the road wheels of the tracked running gear, so the time saved here is even more noticeable than on a conventional tank.
The wheel is placed in the cutout in the flexible mask, which covers the rubber tire band and exposes the metal disc. You then spray the color of the disc and take the wheel out. According to the manufacturer the masks can be used several times after cleaning, so the set makes sense even when you are building several vehicles of the same type one after another.
Do not pull the mask hard when fitting it; it is flexible and will deform if stretched. Once it is seated, press it down with a pointed wooden stick so that it follows the surface. Do not lay two coats of paint on the edge of the mask, that would leave a step. Spray perpendicular to the surface and in thin coats. When you are done, clean the masks and store them flat so that they keep their shape. And never paint the rubber tire bands pure black; a dark gray shade with a slightly lighter crown looks far more convincing in a photograph.
