About product

Wheel masking set 1:35 T-34/76, early 1943 production (Quickwheel)

Self-adhesive masks for painting the road wheels of the T-34/76 tank in the early 1943 production version, in 1:35 scale. The set contains no model parts; its job is to produce a sharp line between the rubber and the disc that is the same on every wheel. The masks are cut for the kit from ICM: wheels from other makers differ in diameter and in the relief of the disc, so check the fit before you stick a mask down.

What is special about the 1943 T-34 running gear

The T-34 has a suspension derived from the Christie design: five large road wheels on each side, no return rollers and a noticeably wider gap between the first and the second wheel. The wheels are huge compared with Western vehicles, so the circumference of the tread that has to be masked is long and every waver of the hand shows on it. On top of that, 1943 is the period in the history of the T-34 when several types of wheel were in use at the same time: alongside the rubber-tired ones there were also all-steel wheels with internal shock absorption, which have no rubber at all. Before you start painting, check which wheels you actually have on your model: the tread stands out only on the rubber-tired ones, and on an all-steel wheel a dark band around the circumference would be a mistake.

What the mask prevents

The most common error on this subject is not a matter of craft but of fact: the modeler outlines every wheel in a dark shade without distinction, including the ones that never had any rubber. The mask prevents that by forcing you to sort the wheels and decide first. The errors of craft are then the usual ones: a wobbly line on a large circumference, thick paint flooding the engraved transition, and an unpainted inner face of the wheel that you can no longer reach once it is fitted to the hull. Lift the mask while the paint has only flashed off, and press it down all the way around: on a large wheel the temptation is to just lay it on and hope.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Soviet Second World War vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who want a clean transition on the large T-34 wheels
  • Those building the version with rubber-tired wheels who want them all alike
  • Airbrush users who paint the running gear before fitting it to the hull

This is a masking aid, not a model. Paints and the kit are not included in the package. For the contents of the sheet, go by the details on the packaging.

FAQ

No. In the period this version belongs to, all-steel wheels with internal shock absorption were also in use. A dark band around the circumference belongs only on wheels with rubber, so check which wheels your model has.

Do not count on it without a dry test. The set is cut for the kit from ICM and wheels from other kits have a different diameter and disc relief.

Shortly after spraying, while the paint has only flashed off. It comes off a fully cured coat less easily and may damage the edge.
