About product

Wheel masking set 1:35 T-72B and T-72B1 (Quickwheel)

Self-adhesive masks for painting the road wheels of the Soviet T-72 tank in the B and B1 versions, in 1:35 scale. The set is neither a kit nor a spare part: it is an aid that fixes the exact line between the rubber and the disc on the wheel, so that both areas can be sprayed separately. The masks are cut for the kit from Trumpeter; with a kit from another maker, check the wheel diameter dry before you stick a mask down.

What is special about the T-72 running gear

The T-72 carries six road wheels on torsion bars on each side, three return rollers, a drive sprocket at the rear and an idler wheel at the front. The wheels are recognizable by their deep dished shape and massive hub, so the rubber tire band sits on a disc of complex shape and the transition between them does not lie in a single plane. That is exactly what makes painting awkward: a brush guided freehand follows what is underneath it rather than where the line should be. The upper part of the running gear is also covered by side skirts, so what you see from the side is mainly the lower half of the wheels, the part a modeler usually paints last and least carefully.

What the mask prevents

The most common error on wheels with a deep disc is letting paint run into the recess and smear a transition that should be sharp. The second is the wrong order of work: anyone who assembles the running gear onto the hull first and only then deals with the wheels has to paint in the cramped space between the skirts and the track. The third is reversing the order of the coats: rubber laid over gloss varnish or over a hull color that is not dry yet lets paint creep under the mask. The mask sets a firm line against all of this and lets you work systematically: paint the wheels while they are still loose, only then assemble the running gear and hang the skirts on last. Press the mask down all the way around, spray perpendicular to the surface in thin coats and lift it while the paint has only flashed off.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of modern Soviet and post-Soviet vehicles in 1:35
  • Modelers whose line smears on deeply shaped discs
  • Those who want all twelve wheels to match
  • Airbrush users who paint the wheels before assembling the running gear

This is a masking aid, not a model. Paints and the kit are not included in the package. For the contents of the sheet, go by the details on the packaging.

FAQ

Primer and the base shade on the loose wheels first, then the rubber circumference through the mask, then assemble the running gear and hang the side skirts on last. Working in the cramped space between the skirts and the track is far harder.

Most often because the base coat was not dry or was glossy, or because the mask was only laid on and not pressed down all the way around. Spraying perpendicular to the surface in thin coats also helps.

That is not guaranteed. The masks are cut for the kit from Trumpeter; with another kit, test the fit dry.
