An injection-molded plastic kit of the American vehicle that came about by fitting a half-track chassis with a rotating gun turret carrying four heavy machine guns of half-inch caliber. The set belongs to the long-running military miniature series of the Japanese firm Tamiya and is typical of it in the clear division of the parts. The open hull leaves the turret and its mounting clearly visible, so the model works as a scene in its own right as well.
The vehicle came about as an answer to the need for mobile anti-aircraft defense escorting columns. The four-barrel assembly on a rotating mount had a high rate of fire and electrical control of elevation and traverse. Very quickly, though, it turned out that it would serve just as well against ground targets: against infantry in built-up areas and in fighting in woodland it earned a nickname derived from a meat grinder.
Finish the running gear and the inside of the hull before the hull is closed up, because later there is no getting inside with a brush. The machine gun barrels come out best when a faint graphite touch is drawn over dark metal and the muzzles are accented with soot. The tracks and the lower edges take mud and dust pigments well; the boxes of ammunition belts in the hull are rewarding for small accents of color.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
