A plastic kit of the German battleship Gneisenau in 1:350 scale from the maker Trumpeter. It is an extensive build for modelers with experience of ships: the superstructures, the gun turrets, the cranes and the deck equipment go together from a great number of small parts and the result is a model over half a meter long.
The Gneisenau was the second unit of the Scharnhorst class, launched in December 1936 and taken into service in May 1938. Fast, well-armored ships with nine guns of 28 centimeters in triple turrets, they were meant to act against Allied convoys. The Gneisenau took part in the operations off Norway and in the famous Channel Dash, in which she fought her way with an escort from Brest to German ports. The damage from the raid on Kiel in 1942 was never repaired, though, and the ship ended as a blockship.
Work from the hull and the deck and build the superstructures as separate assemblies that are fitted only after painting. A wooden deck stands out with underpainting and a fine emphasis of the seams. Gray camouflage looks more convincing when the shades are differentiated slightly between areas. The railings and the fine equipment are finished at the very end, otherwise they get bent while handling.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
