An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:350 scale, the Mikromir part number 350-009 from the Ukrainian maker. According to the manufacturer the package holds sprues of plastic, a photo-etched fret and waterslide decals. The photo-etch is unusually rich here: deck gratings, railings, propellers, radar and small parts of the masts and antennas.
The Nautilus was the first nuclear submarine in the world and the first nuclear-powered vessel of the US Navy at all. She entered service at Groton at the end of September 1954 and her first commander was Eugene P. Wilkinson. She was powered by a Westinghouse pressurized water reactor, originally designated the Submarine Thermal Reactor and only later S2W; it was brought up to power in December 1954. She made her best known voyage in 1958: off Point Barrow in Alaska she dived under the ice and on 3 August passed beneath the geographic North Pole as the first vessel in history. Nuclear power thereby demonstrated for the first time what submarines had lacked since they came about: the ability to stay below the surface for as long as needed.
Plan the sequence around the photo-etch. Glue the hull, fill the longitudinal seam and sand it smooth. Only then the primer coat, the spraying and finally the gluing of the photo-etch with cyanoacrylate glue - railings glued on beforehand will be destroyed during sanding. The deck gratings will stand out if you darken them slightly after spraying with a flowing shade. Mask the boundary between the upper surface and the bottom with a narrow strip of tape.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
