About product

German Type VII B submarine, 1:350, AFV Club

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:350 scale from AFV Club capturing the German Type VII B submarine. The box states two versions of the conning tower, one with the original air ducting and one with the later revision, and further photo-etched metal and decals. The model can be built with the full hull as well as as a waterline version, that is down to the waterline. The finished model is just under twenty centimeters.

The real subject

The Type VII was the most numerous German submarine of the Second World War, and the VII B version was its first widely built variant. Against the preceding type it received larger external tanks, and with them a substantially longer range, and a pair of rudders that improved handling. It was precisely the Type VII B boats that were among the most successful in the first years of the war, and their names are still known to anyone interested in the war in the Atlantic. During service the towers were revised, mainly because of armament and ventilation, so the same boat looked different in different years.

Building and painting tips

Decide right at the start whether you are building the full hull or a waterline version, because the lower parts change with it. Sand the hull join smooth, so that it does not show on an unbroken surface. A gray hull with a darker lower part comes alive if the surfaces are subtly shaded and the edges lifted. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue. For weathering a light wash into the recesses, wear on the edges of the tower and faint traces of rust by the drains are enough.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of ships and submarines in 1:350 scale
  • For modelers who want a smaller project for a few evenings
  • For those interested in the war in the Atlantic
  • For builders of surface scenes down to the waterline

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

In 1:350 scale the length comes out at just under twenty centimeters.

The model is built only down to the waterline, as though it were under way. The other option is the full hull including the lower part.

One matches the original version, the other a later revision of the air ducting. Choose according to the boat and the period you are building.
