An injected plastic kit of the early Sabre in 1:48 scale. Clear Prop Models is a Ukrainian maker which issues kits at two levels of equipment: Advanced is the richer package for more experienced modelers, while the Starter line leaves some of the additions out. This box is the Advanced one and holds fourteen runners (one of them clear), over 170 plastic parts, photo-etched metal of 38 parts, a decal sheet with markings for three F-86A-5 machines from the first squadrons deployed in Korea, and colored assembly instructions.
The North American F-86 Sabre was the first successful American jet fighter with a swept wing. Korea became the first war in which jet fighters faced one another, and it was precisely the duels of Sabres with Soviet MiG-15s over northwestern Korea - in the area nicknamed MiG Alley - that were the first mass clashes of swept-wing jet fighters in history (the very first jet air combat was fought by still older, straight-winged machines). The A version is the earliest one: it had a weaker engine than the later variants, a conventional elevator with an adjustable stabilizer - the Sabre was given all-moving flying tail surfaces only from the E version - and a wing with slots on the leading edge. The armament consisted of six machine guns of 12.7 mm caliber. The later F was more powerful and better in combat; anyone building the A is building a machine from the first months of the fighting.
This is a kit with fine surface detail and an intricate interior - count on careful dry fitting of the parts before gluing, as is usual with Ukrainian production. Glue the plastic with thin cement for plastic, and the photo-etched parts with super glue (cyanoacrylate). Do not forget the weight in the nose, so that the model stands on its nose wheel. Natural metal calls for a smooth, perfectly sanded and primed base and for a lacquer or metallic paint applied with an airbrush in thin coats; mix the metallic thoroughly before spraying and leave it until last, because it is hard to mask and overspray. Put gloss varnish under the decals and a matte or satin overcoat after them. It pays to mask the framed cockpit canopy with tape or with a ready set of masks.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
