About product

Fairey Gannet AS.1/AS.4 1:48 - Airfix

Injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from Airfix, built on a modern, newly developed mold. It is an extensive model - the box holds 334 parts and the manufacturer places it in the highest difficulty category. It offers three fully detailed cockpits, folding wings with the option of building the aircraft in either the stowed or the flight position, an open bomb bay, an extended or retracted radar, antenna variants and a rich load of underwing stores. Three marking schemes for Fleet Air Arm aircraft of the late 1950s are included.

The real subject

The Fairey Gannet was a carrier-borne anti-submarine aircraft of the Royal Navy from the 1950s. The abbreviation AS stands for Anti-Submarine. The most interesting thing about it is the powerplant: two turboprop engines coupled into a single block (the Double Mamba), driving two contra-rotating propellers on one shaft, turning against each other. That brought an unusual operational benefit: on a long patrol over the sea one engine was shut down and the aircraft flew on the other, markedly extending the time it could spend over the target area. The crew was made up of three men in three separate cockpits: pilot, observer and radar operator. A large aircraft on small British carriers called for double-folding wings, one of the most conspicuous features of the type.

Building and painting tips

Plan the sequence: finish and paint the three cockpits before closing the fuselage, and do the same with the inside of the bomb bay. With contra-rotating propellers, watch the correct orientation of the blades - each one turns the other way. Decide in advance whether you are building the wings folded or spread; it affects both the sequence and the masking. Glue with a thin cement for plastic, fill the seams and sand them back. Primer before painting, and spray the Royal Navy camouflage (dark gray upper surface, light underside) with an airbrush; lay the decals onto gloss varnish and bring out the panel lines with a dark wash.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers - an extensive kit of the highest difficulty according to the manufacturer
  • Fans of British naval aviation and carrier-borne aircraft
  • Collectors of unusual engineering - contra-rotating propellers and double-folding wings
  • Those who want rich contents straight from the box with no need for aftermarket

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

AS is short for Anti-Submarine. The Gannet served with the Royal Navy to search for, track and destroy enemy submarines. The numbers distinguish the two production versions that the kit allows you to build.

The aircraft was powered by two turboprop engines coupled into a single block, which drove two contra-rotating propellers on a common shaft. On a long patrol over the sea one engine was shut down to save fuel and the aircraft carried on with the other alone.

Rather not. With 334 parts, three cockpits and a folding wing mechanism it is an extensive build, which even the manufacturer places in the highest difficulty category.

Yes, the kit offers a variant with the wings both folded and spread. Decide before you start building - it affects the gluing sequence as well as the masking.
