Pre-cut masks for painting the wheels of the light Hetzer tank destroyer in 1:48 scale. They cover the rubber tire band and leave the rim exposed, so the line between them is created by spraying. The set is cut for the Hetzer kit from Tamiya.
The Hetzer is based on the chassis of the light Pz.38(t) tank and its running gear is exceptionally straightforward compared with most German machines of the late war: just four large road wheels on leaf springs per side, wide gaps between them and a single return roller on top. Nothing overlaps, nothing has to be painted in advance because it is out of reach. The opposite problem is there instead: the wheels are large, separate and very prominent in relation to the low silhouette of the vehicle, so an imprecise tire band line stands out on them more than on a thicket of small wheels. The running gear is also partly covered by fenders, which create a shadow and an edge above the wheels; when painting it helps to fit them only once the wheels are finished.
With a small number of large wheels it is easy to feel the job is done at once and to lift the mask too late or too abruptly. When the edge of the paint peels, the mask is too tacky for that base coat. That is easy to reduce: before applying it, press the mask once against the back of your hand or onto a clean sheet of glass and pull it off, which takes some of the tack away but leaves enough of it to hold the edge. Pull it away slowly and at an angle across the surface, not straight up. And paint the wheels separately before fitting them into the hull: with the Hetzer that is not essential, but the result is cleaner.
Paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.
