About product

Road wheel masks 1:48 T-34 and SU-122 (for Tamiya kits)

This is a masking set, not a kit and not a set of replacement wheels. It serves a single purpose: to cover the areas of the road wheels that are to stay in a different shade from the rest of the vehicle after spraying. Because the shape of the masks follows specific parts, the set is tied to Tamiya kits and will certainly not fit wheels from another kit.

What makes the running gear of this subject special

Both the T-34 and the SU-122 self-propelled gun derived from its chassis stand on Christie suspension. There are five large road wheels per side with a noticeably wider gap between the first and the second, a drive sprocket at the rear and an idler wheel at the front. Return rollers are missing entirely, so the upper run of the track lies straight on the wheels and there is very little room for a brush between the tire bands. The wheel itself is a large-diameter disc with a rubber tire band running around its circumference. It is precisely the line between the disc and the tire band that is the most awkward part of painting: it is long, circular, and on a large diameter every waver of the tape shows. And with the pair of the T-34 and the SU-122 you are doing the same job on two different hulls, so it pays to keep the procedure identical for both.

Work plan before painting

Before you start sticking anything down, compare the masks with the wheels on the sprues and lay them on dry: that tells you whether you will paint the wheels individually or only once they are fitted on their stub axles. Wash the molded wheels in lukewarm water with detergent and degrease them thoroughly, because a mask holds worse on grease from your fingers than on clean plastic and paint then creeps under the edge. A thin primer follows, which evens out the surface and gives the mask something to hold onto. Plan the order of assembling the running gear in advance: paint the complete running gear first and only then consider fitting the tracks, because once they are on you cannot reach the lower tire bands.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building Soviet vehicles on the T-34 chassis in 1:48 scale
  • Those who do not want to paint the wheel tire bands freehand with a brush
  • Builders who work with an airbrush and need a sharp transition
  • Anyone building the T-34 and the SU-122 side by side who wants them to match

The package contains the masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Do not count on it. The shape of the masks follows specific parts, which is why the set is made for Tamiya kits. With a kit from another maker, always check the fit dry first.

As soon as the paint is dry to the touch and not yet fully cured. In a fully cured film the edge chips easily and takes a piece of the finish with it.

It is not. The set contains no vehicle parts, only masks for painting the wheels that come in the kit.

It is recommended. On a degreased and primed surface the mask holds evenly and paint does not creep under it as readily as on bare glossy plastic.
