About product

54cm Mörser Karl 041 and Munitionspanzer IV Ausf. F in 1:72 scale

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German 54cm Mörser Karl 041 self-propelled siege mortar, complemented by the Munitionspanzer IV Ausf. F ammunition vehicle, in 1:72 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa. In one package you therefore get two machines that belonged together. Check the contents of the package on the box.

The real subject

Karl was the largest self-propelled mortar of the Second World War. It came about as a means of destroying concrete fortifications, and its heavy shells were meant to break through what ordinary artillery could not manage. Only six were built and they were given names of their own from Germanic mythology. The original form, designated Gerät 040, had a barrel of 60 cm caliber; because the range was short, the machines later received a longer barrel of 54 cm caliber and the Gerät 041 variant came about. Under its own power the mortar moved only over short distances, and railway cars served for transport. Ammunition was brought to it by converted vehicles on the chassis of the Panzer IV tank, which had a crane for handling the shells.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the running gear and the inside of the hull before you close the assembly up; on both vehicles they are inaccessible afterwards. Fit the long barrel last, so that it does not warp on you. An airbrush suits German gray or the late three-color camouflage, and a wash and dust pigments then suit bringing the rivets and the plates out. If the package contains rubber tracks, you will join them with cyanoacrylate glue; an ordinary cement for plastic will not join them.

Who the model is for

  • modelers focused on German artillery and technical curiosities
  • builders of dioramas with two cooperating vehicles
  • collectors of 1:72 scale with an appetite for an unusual subject

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

According to the manufacturer the Munitionspanzer IV Ausf. F ammunition vehicle as well. Check the exact contents, the number of parts and the decals on the box.

The Gerät 040 had a barrel of 60 cm caliber, the Gerät 041 a longer barrel of 54 cm caliber and greater range. This set captures the 041 form.

Rather not. These are two machines with running gear and a long barrel, so the set calls for patience and experience in gluing small parts.

Yes, the six mortars that were built were given names from Germanic mythology. Check which markings are in the package on the box.
