About product

The KV-220 heavy tank in 1:72 scale from PST

A plastic kit of the Soviet KV-220 heavy tank prototype in 1:72 scale. The PST brand built it on its KV-1 range molds and added new parts for the hull and the turret of the KV-220. The tracks are of hard plastic, made up of individual links and longer lengths. Check the range of parts and what exactly the package builds on the box.

The real subject

The KV-220, also recorded as Object 220, was created in 1940 as an attempt to strengthen the armor and the firepower of the KV-1 tank. It was given a lengthened hull, a more heavily armored turret of new design and an 85 mm F-30 gun, that is a weapon considerably more effective than the 76 mm gun of the day. The second version, designated KV-220-2, carried the ordinary KV-1 turret with a 76 mm gun. The trials never finished, however: the German advance on Leningrad interrupted the work and both prototypes were lost in the fighting in December 1941. The machine never reached production, so it belongs to that interesting part of Soviet development which ended on paper and on two vehicles completed in the works.

Building and painting tips

Glue the link-and-length tracks onto a dry running gear section by section and keep checking the sag of the upper run. Finish the running gear and the inside of the fighting compartment before you close the hull. A dark wash in the rivets and the welds sits well on the uniform dark green finish, together with dust on the fenders and a metallic sheen on the edges of the track links and on the projections of the hull.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of Soviet prototypes and unfinished projects
  • Collectors of the KV range in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers who have already done link-and-length tracks
  • Builders of dioramas from the fighting at Leningrad

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It was not. It stayed a prototype from 1940, the trials never finished and both machines that were built were lost in the fighting in December 1941. The vehicle never reached production.

The main version had an 85 mm F-30 gun in a new, more heavily armored turret. The second version, designated KV-220-2, carried the ordinary KV-1 turret with a 76 mm gun.

It is a trade nickname given by kit manufacturers, not a period Soviet designation. The subject has no connection with the German Tiger tank; it was simply strikingly heavy and heavily armored for its day.

Link-and-length tracks of hard plastic, that is individual links and longer lengths. They are better defined than rubber tracks, but they call for patience and gluing in sections.
