About product

Me 262 and P-51B: a 1:72 set of kits (Revell)

Injection-molded plastic kits of two fighters from the end of the Second World War in one package, in 1:72 scale. The pairing is no accident: these are technically opposite paths of fighter aviation in the same period, jet propulsion against a powerful piston engine. The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted and suits a comparative display of the two types side by side.

The real subjects

The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the first jet fighter built in series. It was powered by a pair of jet engines in nacelles under the wing, which had a slight sweep; the gun armament consisted of cannon in the nose. The life of the engines of the day was short and operating them was demanding both on maintenance and on the quality of the flying. The North American P-51B Mustang was an American single-engine fighter with a Merlin engine built under license, which gave it performance at high altitude. The B version differs from the later ones in the canopy with a raised rear fuselage spine (the razorback form), that is, the form before the teardrop canopy was introduced.

Building and painting tips

In 1:72 scale cleanliness decides: thin coats of paint, so that the engraved lines do not disappear, and careful cleaning up of the parts. Finish the cockpit and mask the glazing before you close the fuselage. Paint the wheel wells and the landing gear legs separately. On the Me 262 pay attention to the seating of the engine nacelles and their alignment with the wing, and on the Mustang to a clean wing-to-fuselage joint. Apply gloss varnish under the decals and once it has dried unify the surface with a matte or satin varnish. Choose weathering in proportion to the scale: in 1:72 a fine wash and discreet shading of the panels are enough.

FAQ

Yes, the set brings together both types stated in the name. You will find the exact make-up of the sprues and the number of marking options in the instructions.

The 1:72 scale is undemanding on space, but the parts are small. For a complete beginner we recommend a simpler single-engine aircraft.

Above all in the canopy: the B version has a raised rear fuselage spine, the razorback form, while the later versions received a teardrop canopy with a view to the rear.

No, unless that is expressly stated. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
