A plastic kit of a medieval heavy siege gun, the so-called bombard, in 1:72 scale from the Russian brand Zvezda. The box places the subject in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue and paints are not included in the package. A bombard is a rewarding subject for a small diorama, because it brings together wood, metal, rope and earth in a single scene.
The bombard was the first genuinely heavy firearm of the Middle Ages. The barrel was forged from lengthwise staves welded together and bound with hoops, so that it looks like a wooden barrel made of metal. The gun did not move on a carriage but was laid in a massive wooden bed and set into the ground, because the recoil could not otherwise be managed. Bombards fired stone balls and were able to breach walls that had until then been thought impregnable.
Bringing a gun to life means working with materials. Paint the forged barrel in a dark iron and, once it is dry, bring it out with rust in various shades, best applied dry with a brush and a sponge. The wooden bed stands out when a dark wash is applied over a lighter undercoat, which draws out the grain and the gaps. Then bring the ropes and the wedges to life with earth pigments. Because the model is small, it is worth building it a simple base with earth and grass.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
