A plastic kit of a Spanish galleon in 1:96 scale from the Revell brand belongs among the large sailing ships: the finished model is over seventy centimeters long.
Responsibility details are not available.
A sizeable kit with a richly decorated hull, a turning rudder, gun armament on carriages, a ship's boat with oars and figures of the crew. Pre-formed sails with a suggested weave texture, ready-made shroud ladders, a set of threads in various thicknesses for the rigging and stands for the hull are all included. According to the manufacturer the set has around three hundred parts and the finished model measures about seventy-two centimeters in length with a height of over sixty centimeters.
The galleons of the sixteenth century were the backbone of Spanish sea power. They combined the cargo space of a merchant ship with the gunnery of a warship and carried silver from the American colonies across the Atlantic in convoys known as the silver fleets. A high stern with a gallery, three to four masts and a combination of square and lateen sails gave them a silhouette that even a layman recognizes today.
Glue the hull up in sections and watch that the decks seat without strain; on a long model every deviation adds up. The decorated elements come out well if you run a dark wash over them once painted and, on the contrary, lighten the upper edges gently. Set aside quiet time for the rigging and work from the masts outward. It is a good idea to draw the threads through beeswax before tying them, so that they do not fray.
The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue and paints are not enclosed.
