Sheets of polystyrene half a millimeter thick. The material matches what plastic kits are molded from, so it bonds with ordinary cement for plastic and can be sanded, scribed and shaped with heat. This thickness is among the most used, because it can still be cut comfortably and yet already holds its shape.
The cleanest cut comes from scoring the sheet several times with a sharp blade along a ruler and then snapping it over the edge of the table. Then level the edge with a sanding stick. Try the part dry before gluing; once the cement has set the position is hard to change. Apply cement sparingly, the solvent softens the material quickly and the surface can ripple. Store the sheets flat, a bent piece will never straighten out again.
It pays to make a stock of rectangles in common sizes out of the offcuts. When you then need a bulkhead or a backing plate quickly, you reach for a ready piece instead of starting a whole new sheet for one small part.
When cutting, work with a sharp knife on a cutting mat and do not inhale the sanding dust.
