A roller engraved with a pattern of irregular stone paving, fitted with a handle. Unlike regular setts this is a pattern of flat stones of different sizes, of the kind found in old courtyards, on country tracks and at historic buildings. The pattern is pressed into a soft compound in a single pass.
According to the marking, the size of the element corresponds to fifteen millimeters. The roller is run over a rolled-out layer of modeling compound, the finished slab is left to cure, cut to shape and set into the scene. The pattern can equally well be pressed straight into the base of a diorama or into a part of a surface being repaired.
Damp the roller and the compound lightly before pressing, or coat them with a release agent, so that the compound does not stick. Keep the pressure even. Irregular paving looks best when the individual stones are painted in different shades and the joints filled with darker earth or sand. A few stones can be cut out after curing and replaced with a hole full of mud.
