The DSPIAE SS-C01 sanding disc set, 5 mm in diameter

Foam sanding discs with a self-adhesive back, five millimeters in diameter, which are stuck onto a mandrel and clamped into a modeling drill or a grinding pen. The set brings together four grits from coarse to fine. The small diameter is the whole point of this version: it reaches into corners, between projecting details, into recesses and along engraved lines, where a larger disc catches on the surroundings before it ever touches the place you want to level.

Why a foam backing

Foam compresses under pressure and wraps around a shape, so the disc sands evenly over a curved surface as well and does not hollow a facet into it. It also keeps the working temperature lower than a hard abrasive head, which matters with plastic, because overheated styrene smears instead of being removed.

How to work with them

• Stick the disc onto the mandrel exactly in the center, otherwise it will run out of true as it turns.
• Keep the speed low and do not press; on a small diameter pressure will tear the disc off.
• Go through the grits in order; a step that has been skipped shows up only under the paint.
• Rinse a clogged disc with clean water and let it dry.
• In a tight place work in short touches and keep checking how much you have taken off.

Who it is for

The set is aimed at modelers who sand in intricate places: the insides of cockpits, the spaces between details, the areas around hatches and joints a hand-held sanding pad cannot reach. The individual grits and replacement mandrels are sold separately.

Do not breathe in the sanding dust from plastic and resin; work with extraction or at least with a respirator.
