DSPIAE SS-C02 sanding discs, 1000 grit, 10 mm in diameter

Twenty-four foam discs with a self-adhesive back, ten millimeters in diameter. A grit of one thousand is the finest of the four in the range and it is not used to remove material but to smooth away the marks left by the previous step. After it the surface has no visible scratches and takes primer in an even coat.

When to reach for it

Only at the end. The 1000 grit has nothing to remove, so if scratches from a coarser grain have been left underneath it will merely polish them and make them more visible. It also pays to go over the places that were sanded by hand, because the difference in sheen between a hand-worked and a machine-worked surface is noticeable under the paint.

How to work with them

• Stick the disc onto the mandrel exactly in the center, otherwise it will run out of true.
• Keep the speed low; at a fast run a fine grain merely heats up and smears the plastic.
• Do not press; a foam disc should work under the weight of the tool alone.
• Rinse a clogged disc with clean water and let it dry.
• Clean the part before moving to this grit, as a single grain from the coarser step will make a scratch.

The refill is for those who already use the discs in this range and have used up the finest grit, and for modelers who want the surface ready for a gloss coat or for metallic paint. It is with gloss and metallic shades that every unsmoothed scratch shows up most.

Do not breathe in the sanding dust from plastic and resin; work with extraction or at least with a respirator.
