A color-printed photo-etched interior for the 1:24 model of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-5 from Airfix: instrument panel, panels and belts.
Responsibility details are not available.
The G-5 version was built as the pressurized counterpart of the later Gustav, and it was recognizable by the small air intake for the compressor on the left side of the fuselage. It reached high altitudes earlier than most contemporary fighters, but it paid for the cabin pressure with heavier glazing and a poorer view. It was built from the spring of 1943 and pilots tended to like it less, because the thickened canopy spoiled their orientation exactly where it mattered most.
1:24 is the ideal setting for photo-etched metal. The cockpit is over three centimeters wide inside, so molded knobs and switches on a plastic wall look soft and flat when seen from above, while metal keeps them crisp right out to the edge. The color-printed parts also bring legible dials that would take a whole evening to paint by hand. Metal has no depth of its own, though. Consoles and frames therefore have to be built up from several layers, or the result looks flat.
The color-printed pieces will not take harsh solvents or coarse sanding; the print would rub off. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin in the smallest possible amount, not with plastic cement, which does not hold on metal. The original molded detail is removed from the plastic first, so that the new part seats flush.
The set is built around a particular kit from Airfix. The model, paints and glue are not part of the package.
