Photo-etched steel seat belts for the model of the Gloster Meteor F.8 jet and the FR.9 reconnaissance version in 1:32 scale by Revell.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Gloster Meteor reached the squadrons while the Second World War was still on and, as the only Allied jet to see combat, it shot down flying bombs over southern England. The post-war F.8 version received a longer fuselage, an ejection seat and a revised vertical tail; it was this mark that carried the main burden of British fighter aviation at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s. The FR.9 reconnaissance version was based on the same airframe, with the nose given over to photographic cameras.
The straps are the part of a cockpit where the difference between materials shows up first. Brass is soft and after bending it holds its shape only roughly, whereas springy steel can be formed into a freely hanging loop that survives later handling. At the same time it tolerates a smaller thickness, so the buckles and fittings look convincing when scaled up to full size. There is a price for that quality: steel is harder to cut and shaping it calls for stiffer tweezers than ordinary photo-etch.
The belts go into the model before the fuselage is closed, otherwise there is no working inside a finished cockpit. The fittings tend to be printed in color, while the straps themselves are often painted in place. Dose the super glue with the tip of a wire, because any excess creeps along the metal and floods the relief.
The set covers only the pilot restraint in one specific kit by Revell. The rest of the cockpit, the model and paints are not in the package.
