About product

Eduard 1:72 P-51D Mustang - exhausts (for the Arma Hobby kit)

This is NOT an airplane kit. It is a detail set from Eduard in the Brassin line: replacement exhaust stacks for the P-51D Mustang in 1:72 scale, designed for the Arma Hobby plastic kit. The parts are made by 3D printing (resin), and the plastic model has to be bought separately.

Why exhausts get replaced at all

An injection-molded plastic part is almost always a compromise: the stacks tend to be blanked off and thick-walled, because the mold allows nothing else. An aftermarket exhaust, by contrast, has thin walls and open, hollow mouths, and that is exactly what makes the difference, because on a Mustang the exhausts are highly visible: they sit exposed in a row on both sides of the engine, right in the line of sight of the model. They are also the first place where weathering is done: soot and rusty, oily streaks behind the exhausts are among the most characteristic marks of wear on a Mustang. On a closed plastic lump this effect never looks as good as on hollow stacks.

With a fairing or without?

The P-51D appeared in two exhaust arrangements, with an aerodynamic fairing and without one, depending on the individual machine and the production batch. Eduard therefore releases both variants separately. According to its name this is the version without a fairing, that is bare stacks. Before building, please check which arrangement was carried by the machine whose markings you want to build: it is a detail that those in the know will notice.

Tips for working with resin and 3D prints

The parts cannot be glued with polystyrene cement, which takes hold neither on resin nor on a 3D print. Use super glue (cyanoacrylate) or epoxy. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water to remove print resin residue and cleaning fluid, otherwise the paint will not hold. Do the sanding and the cleaning up wet: dust from resin and 3D prints is harmful to health and must not be inhaled. Leave the mouths of the stacks open, and darkening them from the inside is worth doing; only then do the soot and the streaks pay off.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the P-51D Mustang in 1:72 from the Arma Hobby kit
  • modelers who are bothered by blanked-off plastic exhausts
  • those who do honest weathering (soot, streaks behind the exhausts)
  • collectors who want the greatest detail in a small scale

It is not an airplane model but an accessory. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

A plastic part tends to be blanked off and thick-walled. An aftermarket exhaust has thin walls and open mouths, and because the exhausts sit exposed along the sides of the engine, it shows on the model at once, especially once the soot and the streaks go on.

The P-51D flew in both arrangements and Eduard releases both variants separately. According to the name this is the version without a fairing. We recommend checking which arrangement your particular machine had, according to the markings you choose.

With super glue (cyanoacrylate) or epoxy. Polystyrene cement works neither on resin nor on a 3D print.

Yes: wash them in lukewarm soapy water to remove print resin residue and cleaning fluid. Do the sanding wet, as dust from resin and 3D prints is harmful to health and must not be inhaled.
