A photo-etched metal set for the 1:72 model of the F/A-18A Hornet carrier aircraft, for the kit from Academy.
Responsibility details are not available.
The McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet entered service in 1983 as a machine meant to replace three older types in the Navy at once. The letters F and A in the designation say that it was a fighter and an attack aircraft in one, which was an unusual idea at the time. The A version was single-seat and the baseline one; the whole later family up to the Super Hornet grew out of its carrier experience. Over Libya and in the Persian Gulf the type earned a reputation as a machine that comes back from a combat sortie even after being hit.
This is where the limit of what photo-etch can do is tightest of all the scales. Rivet spacing comes close to hundredths of a millimeter, and if metal tried to reproduce it, the result would disappear under the paint. What does work excellently are the areas that are supposed to be genuinely thin: intake grilles, the plates of the landing gear doors, the airbrake and the edges of the intake ducts. The plastic is necessarily thick in those places, because a wall under 0.3 mm cannot be released from the mold. The difference then shows even in a photograph.
Fit the parts in groups and always let the glue become tacky before you reach for the next piece. In this scale a part weighs so little that a breath will blow it away, so work over a tray with raised edges. Apply the paint in a genuinely thin coat, or it will flood the relief you are buying the set for.
The set is built around the kit from Academy. The model itself and the paints are not part of the delivery.
