The cabin interior equipment for the most numerous late production series of the Thunderbolt. A casting with three-dimensional panel decals, prepared for the MiniArt set.
Responsibility details are not available.
The production series numbered thirty was built at a time when the focus of the type's work had shifted from escorting formations to attacking ground targets. The machines of this series were given modifications matching the new job: dive recovery flaps under the wing to make pulling out of a steep dive easier, and mountings for unguided rockets. Over France and Germany in the last year of the war the Thunderbolts flew mostly low, against trains, columns and airfields.
The package deals with the whole compartment in one go. The basis is a casting with the box, the floor and the side walls, onto which the color three-dimensional decals go. They carry the main panel as well as the smaller distribution panels, they have a height of their own and once pressed down they conform to the surface, so that the individual dials genuinely stand out. The set thereby replaces hand painting with a fine brush practically completely.
The compartment is assembled and painted before the fuselage halves are joined, because afterwards it is accessible only from above through a narrow opening. A dry test of both fuselage halves with the casting inside will show where material has to be taken off the side walls. It is always taken off the resin, never off the plastic of the fuselage, so that the outer shapes are not disturbed. The color surface on the casting holds best after degreasing and a thin coat of primer.
American fighters of the time carried a greenish protective finish inside, whereas the area with the instruments tended to be flat black because of glare into the eyes. The difference between the two areas gives depth even without artificial shading. A thin oil line or dry pastel then brings out the edges and the riveted joints.
