1:48 MiG-21 in Ukrainian Service

MiG-21 in Ukrainian Service - decal set from Clear Prop Models, 1:48 scale

A set of waterslide decals from Clear Prop Models, intended for models of the MiG-21 fighter in 1:48 scale. It holds the markings of machines that served in Ukrainian service. It is not a model and not a kit: it is an accessory that is applied to an already built and painted model. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package. The particular number of schemes and the exact subvariants are not stated here as certain; the binding source is always the instruction sheet enclosed in the package.

The real subject

The MiG-21 is a light supersonic frontline fighter with a characteristic delta wing and a circular nose air intake with a movable intake cone. It is among the most widespread jet combat aircraft in history and was built in many subvariants, from the early day fighters to the later multirole and two-seat training machines. After the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991 Ukraine inherited an extensive air fleet including MiG-21s; these machines were gradually withdrawn from the front line over the following years. The Ukrainian periods of service brought their own form of national insignia and tactical numbers, which is an attractive alternative for modelers to the usual Soviet schemes.

Use and application tips

• Apply the decals over a smooth gloss coat: a matte surface creates a whitish silvering under the decal film.
• Cut them out as close to the print as possible, soak them in warm water only briefly and let the decal float into place.
• Use decal softener and a setting solution so that the markings settle into the panel lines and onto curved surfaces.
• Once dry, wash the residue of the adhesive off with water and varnish the whole model with a matte or semi-gloss clear coat.
• Work with tweezers and a soft brush, as sharp tools can tear the thin film.

Who the set is for

For modelers who are building the MiG-21 in 1:48 scale and want to finish the model in Ukrainian markings instead of the decals from the box. It also suits collectors of decal sets and the building of themed display cases devoted to the aviation of Eastern Europe.

The package holds decals with instructions. The model, paints and glue are not included.
