The Grumman F6F Hellcat was an American carrier-based fighter of the Second World War, built as a rugged aircraft for service on aircraft carriers: a wide-set landing gear, folding wings and, up front, a powerful air-cooled eighteen-cylinder radial engine. The F6F-5 version was the last and most numerous production variant. Air flowing around the cylinders has to exit the cowling somewhere, and that is the job of the cooling flaps at its rear edge. The pilot opened them when running the engine on the ground, while taxiing and while climbing; in fast flight, by contrast, he closed them down, since open flaps create drag.

It gives the model the look of an aircraft parked on deck or ready for takeoff, which is how the aircraft is most often shown in photographs. The parts are not styrene, so use cyanoacrylate (super glue) to attach them. Cut away excess material a short distance from the part with a sharp blade and sand the rest down; watch the thin edges of the flaps as you do, since they break off easily. Before painting, wash the surface in lukewarm water with dish soap and let it dry.
Test-fit the cowling before gluing so it lines up with the fuselage without a step. The interior is visible with the flaps open, so paint it before fitting the part, and paint the cowling's edges separately from the rest of the model. Then highlight the interior surfaces with a dark wash, or they will look flat.
