About product

The markings by which formations were recognized in Normandy

In the summer of 1944 British and Allied armored vehicles carried a dense layer of markings which had its own order. A colored square with a number said which battalion the vehicle belonged to, the divisional sign on the fender identified the higher formation, and a white star in a circle served as a recognition marking for aircraft. Anyone who knows this system can tell from a photograph both the particular unit and the week in which the picture was taken. That is exactly why the markings are so interesting for builders of vehicles from the invasion campaign.

What the set does about it

Instead of ready-made motifs on film, the builder gets cut stencils. The marking is sprayed directly into the finish, so it has the same degree of gloss and the same texture as the surrounding area. The rim of a clear layer, which with decals tends to be visible on the rough surface of a casting, falls away, and there is no risk of wrinkling over a rivet or an edge either.

Who it pays off for

This is the part of the build where the difference between a decal and a mask shows most, and at the same time the one that tests accuracy most. The stencils have to be placed straight and on multicolor markings they have to follow on from one another, so a rule, tweezers and calm come in handy. For a quick build or for a modeler who is only starting out, decals are simpler and forgive a mistake. But anyone building a weathered vehicle with worn paint will appreciate that a sprayed marking can be sanded and stippled into just like the rest of the finish.

Recommended procedure

The base must be smooth and cured, otherwise paint will creep under. The model and the paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

A sprayed marking has no carrier layer of its own, its edges do not shine and it can be sanded or stippled afterward when the vehicle is aged.

It calls for exact placing of the stencil and, on multicolor markings, for the parts to follow on from one another. For a quick build decals tend to be simpler.

The set is aimed at British vehicles from Western Europe in 1944 in 1:35 scale. A particular kit is not given in the name.

Creeping is most often caused by a base that is not smooth enough or not cured. A thin coat of clear under the stencil helps.
