About product

1:24 decal sheet, BMW M3 Unitron No. 13 and 14, DTM 1991 (Studio27)

A set of water-slide decals from the Japanese maker Studio27 in 1:24 scale. This is not a kit: there are no plastic parts, no body and no wheels in the package, as you get strictly the markings. To be able to use them, you must already have the BMW M3 (E30) model from Aoshima, for which the sheet is intended. The big plus of this set: it covers two cars with race numbers 13 and 14, so from one purchase you build a pair of cars of the same team, or you have a reserve in case a decal is damaged during the transfer.

The real subject

The BMW M3 of the E30 generation is the most successful touring racing car of all time, with over a thousand victories and dozens of titles across world series to its name. It came about because of homologation: for BMW to be allowed to enter the M3 in Group A, it had to build a road version as well. From there come the typical flared fenders and the large rear spoiler which make the M3 an immediately recognizable silhouette. At the turn of the 1980s and 1990s the German DTM was the hardest touring car series in the world: works wars between BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Opel, enormous budgets, bumper to bumper battles and full grandstands. The cars from this sheet raced the 1991 season in the colors of the sponsor Unitron Computer.

How to apply the decals

The base must be glossy. On matte clear coat air is caught under the film of the decal and the edges start to silver, which is the single most common mistake and on a dark body you will hide it nowhere. The procedure is therefore: paint, gloss clear coat, and only then the decals. The fenders, the spoiler and the sills of the M3 are curved and angular at the same time, so decal softener comes in handy, which draws a marking into the shape and into the engraved panel lines. Then seal the finished markings with clear coat and polish the surface, as a circuit car is meant to be smooth and glossy. Count on the fact that the sheet does not cover the whole body: you have to spray the basic color of the car yourself and it has to match in shade, otherwise the boundary of the decal will show.

Who the sheet is for

  • Modelers who already have or are getting the BMW M3 E30 model from Aoshima.
  • Fans of the DTM from the hardest era of touring cars.
  • Collectors who want a pair of team cars in the display case, not just one car.
  • More experienced builders, as the precise placing of racing markings calls for calm and for softener.

The package contains decals only. The model of the car, paints, gloss and clear coat, softener and glue are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is strictly a sheet of decals, that is markings. The BMW M3 E30 model, specifically the kit from Aoshima, has to be on hand or bought separately.

Decals are applied to gloss clear coat. On a matte surface air stays under the film and the edges lighten toward silver. So coat the body with gloss clear coat before the decals and flatten or polish it only at the end.

The sheet is prepared for two cars with race numbers 13 and 14. You can therefore build a pair of team cars, or keep the second set of markings as a reserve.

Besides the model, above all paint for the body (the sheet does not cover the whole area), gloss clear coat under the decals, decal softener for the curved shapes and clear coat to seal them.
