A sheet of waterslide decals from the Japanese maker Studio27 in 1:20 scale for the Porsche 935 kit from Tamiya. It holds the markings of the car with race number 52 from the DRM round at the Belgian circuit of Zolder in 1977. It is not a kit — there is no plastic in the package, only the decal sheet; the basic model has to be your own.
The Porsche 935 came about as a racing derivative of the 911 for Group 5, the category nicknamed the road monsters or Silhouette. The rules permitted practically anything — enormous widened fenders, massive rear wings, a heavily turbocharged engine. Of the production car essentially only the silhouette remained. The most typical feature is the flat nose without headlights in the fenders: the lights moved into the front bumper, so the front fenders could be straight and drawn up above the hood. That is exactly why the 935 looks so unmistakable.
The DRM — the German touring and racing car championship — was from 1977 the main scene of Group 5, and the 935 appeared in its grids in dozens of different private team colors. The Belgian circuit of Zolder was among the tracks the DRM visited; it is a track that later entered motorsport history tragically as well — in 1982 Gilles Villeneuve was killed there during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix. The strength of the private stables of that era is best shown by 1979, when the Kremer Racing team won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with its own version of the 935 K3 and beat the works machines — that is, however, a different car from the one on this sheet.
The basic rule: decals belong on a gloss clear coat. On matte paint air is trapped under the carrier film and the decal starts to silver — a grayish edge appears around the motif. Proceed therefore gloss clear coat, decals, a coat of clear varnish, polishing if you wish, and matting only at the very end if the scheme calls for it. The body of the 935 is full of curves, so use a decal softener; without it the film will crease on the fenders and the spoilers. Trim the decals with a sharp scalpel and a new blade and check the position dry — once dry, the decal will not move any more.
This is a separate decal sheet, it is NOT a kit. The model, the paints, the varnish and the softener are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
