About product

McLaren MP4/24 — Australian Grand Prix 2009, 1:20, Studio27 (Multimedia Kit)

A multimedia kit from Studio27 in 1:20 scale. Yes, it is a kit — but not a plastic one and not one for beginners. Multimedia Kit means a combination of materials: a resin body and main parts, metal castings for the small and highly loaded elements, photo-etched sheet for grilles, straps and thin edges, and with them rubber tires, decals and any clear parts. The parts have no plastic pins and sockets — everything is dry fitted, sanded and fitted together.

Why do people take this on? Because nobody makes this car from this race in plastic. Short-run multimedia sets are the only way to have a precisely defined car from one particular Grand Prix — hence the limited availability and the interest of collectors.

The real subject

The year 2009 was a hard lesson for McLaren. The reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton was handed the MP4/24, which was uncompetitive at the start of the season — the winter tests already showed an aerodynamic deficit and both drivers hung around the bottom of the results sheets. The Australian Grand Prix was the opening race of the season and it ended as a fiasco for the team: after the race Hamilton was disqualified for misleading information given to the stewards about a battle behind the safety car, and McLaren lost the points it had scored.

The story of the MP4/24 does not end there, though — the team developed the car substantially during the year and in the second half of the season Hamilton won twice with it. The model from Australia therefore captures the car in its early, pre-development specification — exactly the state in which the season began.

Building and painting tips

The most important step, on which the build stands or falls: wash the parts first in warm water with detergent and a brush. Mold release agent stays on the castings — without washing, the paint will not grip and will peel once dry. Once dry, spray on filler primer.

Next: resin cannot be glued with plastic cement — only with cyanoacrylate glue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw (not with nippers) and clean up the flash. Resin dust is harmful to health — sand wet, with a respirator and in a ventilated space. Bend the photo-etched sheet with an etch bender or at least with a razor blade and tweezers. The silver and red McLaren livery needs a smooth surface, because a metallic finish reveals every unfinished scratch. Apply the sponsor decals onto a gloss clear coat.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers with experience of resin, metal and photo-etched parts
  • Collectors of modern Formula 1 and fans of Lewis Hamilton
  • Those who collect cars from particular Grands Prix, not generic F1 models
  • Builders who want a pair: the opening race of the 2009 season and with it the MP4/24 from the Monaco Grand Prix — a different race, a different specification of the car
  • Not suitable for beginners, nor for building without cyanoacrylate glue and sanding tools

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a multimedia kit. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a multimedia kit — resin main parts, metal castings, photo-etched sheet, rubber tires and decals. Plastic cement does not work on it; cyanoacrylate glue is necessary. It is not intended for beginners.

Because mold release agent has stayed on the parts. Before painting, wash the parts in warm water with detergent and a brush, let them dry and apply filler primer. Without this step the paint does not hold — it is the most common cause of a ruined resin build.

They are two different races of the 2009 season and the car had a different specification for each of them (aerodynamics and set-up for the fast circuit in Melbourne versus for the narrow streets of Monaco), including different decals. They are not interchangeable — choose according to the race you want to build.

Yes, resin dust must not be inhaled. Sand strictly wet, use a respirator and ventilate. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, not with nippers — the casting would crack.
