About product

Ferrari F2012 1:20 — a Studio27 photo-etched set (for the Fujimi kit)

Careful: this is neither a model nor a kit. It is a detail set from the Japanese maker Studio27 that is added to an already purchased Fujimi kit of the Ferrari F2012 single-seater in 1:20 scale. The set is cut exactly for this one particular Fujimi kit — on a model from another maker or on another type of car it will not fit. Before buying, therefore, check that you have the corresponding Fujimi kit. The model itself, the glue and the paints are not included in the package.

The real subject

The Ferrari F2012 was the Scuderia Ferrari car for the 2012 season. Fernando Alonso fought a dramatic battle for the title with Sebastian Vettel with it and lost by a mere three points in the final race in Brazil, even though for a long time the F2012 was not among the fastest cars in the field — which is why that season is still regarded as one of the finest driving performances in the history of Formula 1. The unmistakable identifying feature of the 2012 field is the stepped nose: new safety rules pushed the tip of the nose down, but the designers wanted to keep the airflow under the car, so a sharp step appeared on the nose. The F2012 moreover had pull-rod suspension front and rear.

Why a photo-etched set makes most sense on a modern Formula 1 car

  • Plastic cannot do a truly thin edge. A molded grille is always only a suggested engraving — photo-etched brass sheet is as thin as real sheet metal in scale, and that is the difference that decides things on a display table.
  • A Formula 1 car has no bodywork to hide mistakes. It is exposed — you see every wire, every seat belt, every buckle and every radiator grille.
  • Modern cars like the F2012 are full of aerodynamic flaps, slots and vanes — and in plastic those are always far too thick. Photo-etched parts make them as thin as they really are. This is the strongest argument for this set.

Honestly: what to expect

  • Photo-etched sheet has to be bent — ideally in an etch bender, at the very least with a razor blade and good tweezers.
  • It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, not with plastic modeling cement.
  • The original plastic detail often has to be sanded away first — and that is an irreversible step on the part.
  • It calls for tweezers, a magnifier and patience. It is work for more experienced modelers.

Who the set is for

For the modeler who already has the Ferrari F2012 kit from Fujimi and wants to get the most out of it — or who is taking the model to a competition where detail counts.

The set holds additional parts for the kit, not the model itself. The basic kit, the glue, the paints and the tools are not included in the package.

FAQ

Neither. It is a set of additional upgrade parts for the Ferrari F2012 kit from Fujimi, which you have to have separately. Without it the set has nothing to be built into.

No. The photo-etched parts are cut for one particular Fujimi kit and do not fit a model of another brand. Before buying, check which kit you have at home.

Cyanoacrylate glue. Classic plastic cement does not work on brass sheet. An etch bender is useful for the bends, and a razor blade and tweezers will also serve.

Rather not. The parts are small, they have to be bent and some plastic details have to be sanded away before fitting — which is irreversible. We recommend it after a few built models.
