About product

A Studio27 photo-etched set for the Brabham BT50 in 1:20 scale

Let us be direct: this is not a kit and it is not a model. It is a set of additional parts for the Tamiya kit of the Brabham BT50 — you have to have the basic kit, otherwise the set has nothing to improve. It is made by the Japanese company Studio27.

What the set contains

These are photo-etched parts: grilles, sheet-metal stiffeners and plates, seat belts and two alternative versions of the rear wing endplates — so you can choose the configuration of the car. On the BT50 that is particularly useful, because Tamiya builds its model so that once the upper cover is removed the monocoque and the mechanicals remain exposed — and that is where detail shows most.

Why photo-etched parts

Injection-molded plastic cannot do a truly thin edge or a genuinely open grille. A molded grille is only a suggested engraving in a blind surface. Photo-etched sheet, by contrast, has the thickness of real sheet metal in scale — and on a Formula 1 car that decides things, because the car is completely exposed. There is no bodywork here to cover mistakes: you see every belt, every buckle and every grille.

The real subject

The Brabham BT50 of 1982 is a historically exceptionally important car. From the pen of Gordon Murray it came as the carrier of the turbocharged BMW engine — it was the car with which the BMW turbo made its mark in Formula 1 and set off on a path that a year later led to the world championship title. It was driven by Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese. And one more thing: it was with the BT50 that Brabham came up in 1982 with the planned pit stop in the middle of a race — refueling and a tire change as a deliberate tactic. The car started light and fast and took on fuel only during the race. That idea changed the tactics of Formula 1 for good.

Practical notes — honestly

  • Photo-etched sheet has to be bent — an etch bender makes life easier.
  • It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, not with plastic cement.
  • The original plastic detail often has to be sanded away — this is irreversible.
  • The set is for more experienced modelers: tweezers, a magnifier and patience.

This is an additional set of parts, not a kit. The basic Tamiya model, the glue, the paints and the tools are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. This is purely a set of additional parts for improving the detail. You have to have the Tamiya kit of the Brabham BT50 or buy it separately.

It brings photo-etched grilles, sheet-metal plates and stiffeners, seat belts and two alternative versions of the rear wing endplates. On this model that makes a great deal of sense: once the upper cover is removed the monocoque and the mechanicals stay visible, so the detail has nowhere to hide.

Cyanoacrylate glue — plastic cement does not hold on metal. Then tweezers, a sharp knife, a magnifier and ideally an etch bender, because photo-etched parts have to be bent into shape. Reckon also with sanding the original plastic detail away, which is an irreversible step.

It was the car with which the turbocharged BMW engine made its mark in Formula 1 and set off on a path to the title in the very next season. It was driven by Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese. On top of that it was with this car that Brabham introduced the planned pit stop with refueling and a tire change in 1982 — a tactic that changed Formula 1 for good.
