This is neither a kit nor a photo-etched set. It is a decal sheet that is applied from the inside, to the inner face of the clear parts of the headlights and rear lights of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V plastic kit from Tamiya. You have to have the model itself; this is an addition to it. It is made by the Japanese company Studio27.
A real headlight is not an empty transparent bubble. In it there is a reflector, a bulb, fluted glass, structure, an indicator and a fog lamp — layers with depth that refract light. A kit gives you only a clear piece of plastic, and it tells: the headlight comes across as a dead eye. With the rear lights it is worse still — real ones have separate chambers, a fine structure and different colors (brake, position, reversing), while on a model only a red pancake is left.
The essential point is this: the lights are the first thing anyone looks at on a car model. They are the face of the car. When they are dead, the whole model is dead — even if the paint is flawless. A decal puts that right in a few minutes: you apply it from the inside and the headlight gains depth at once.
The Lancer Evo V was the peak of Mitsubishi's path in the WRC in the second half of the 1990s. With the Evo V, Tommi Mäkinen took the drivers' world championship title in 1998 and Mitsubishi its only manufacturers' title. Its opponent throughout that time was the Subaru Impreza WRC — the duel of the blue car and the white and red one is among the finest chapters in rallying. Studio27 makes the same inner-lens decals for the Impreza as well. Anyone who builds one usually builds the other sooner or later — in the cabinet they belong side by side.
The decal belongs on the inner face of the clear part, that is on the side that disappears inside the body. It has to be there before you glue the clear part into the body — after that you will no longer reach the inside. The clear part must be perfectly clean and free of fingerprints: grease and even a small speck are emphasized under the decal and will be visible through the glass for good. Wash it in lukewarm water with detergent and hold it by the edges. To glue clear parts use glue meant for clear parts — both ordinary and cyanoacrylate glue fog clear plastic. Polishing compound and clear varnish will then restore the gloss.
Decals are not a kit. The basic model, the glue, the paints and the varnishes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
