The landing on the coast of Calvados in June 1944 brought fighting that nobody had planned for. A countryside divided by centuries-old banks with dense vegetation turned every field into a fortress of its own and denied the attacker the advantage of his equipment. German formations with a higher level of training and armament fought delaying actions here until the front was broken through and the Falaise pocket closed in August of the same year.
The defining item is the reversible camouflage smock pulled on over the tunic, with a helmet cover of the same cloth to match. The patterns differed from one production batch to the next, from blotches with sharp edges to a finer drawing, which allows a modeler to vary every figure. Around the waist there is usually a belt with ammunition pouches, a bread bag and a greatcoat roll on the back, and a submachine gun or a rifle with a magazine over the shoulder.
The camouflage smock is a test of patience for a figure painter and the greatest reward at the same time. On a large casting the base, the drawing and the final lightening of the edges can all be layered, and the result carries the whole scene. Around it a broken stone wall, apple trees and the wreck of a light armored vehicle suggest themselves.
The 1:32 ratio means large figures with legible detail. How many figures the package holds the name does not reveal, and the castings arrive in the raw state. The span of time given in the name reaches beyond the end of the Normandy campaign, so the set can also be used for the later fighting on the Western Front, where the look of the infantry no longer changed markedly.
