British line infantry of the Napoleonic wars in 1:72 scale. Red coats, the shako and a closed two-deep line give a scene exactly the military mass that the countryside alone never has.
Responsibility details are not available.
The infantry that decided matters on the Iberian Peninsula and at Waterloo between 1808 and 1815 differed from its opponents in the way it built its fighting. While the continental armies formed deep columns, the British held a deployed two-deep line and relied on a volley at short range followed by a bayonet charge. The set captures the rank and file in ordinary field dress, that is in the coat with colored facings, with a leather infantry pack and the Brown Bess musket.
Soldiers in a closed formation carry information that an individual cannot pass on: the width of the front. As soon as a line of figures of the same height appears on the groundwork, a diorama starts to have both depth and scale, because the eye measures the distance to a building or to an artillery position in the background against them. We therefore recommend leaving part of the rank and file moving forward and part in the firing position.
The set is intended to be glued and painted; it holds the figures alone, without a base, terrain elements or paints.
It has proved worthwhile to set the formation on a gentle rise so that its whole length is visible, and to scatter a few isolated skirmishers in front of it. The contrast between the closed formation and a loose pair tells at once where the main fighting is going on and where there is only a forward screen.
