About product

A sagging tire under an armored attacker

The Henschel Hs 129 was a twin-engined attack aircraft of German production with a heavily armored forward section and a conspicuously cramped cockpit, where some of the instruments had to go outside onto the engine covers. It was powered by captured French radials and the machine was permanently underpowered. The B-2 version carried an anti-tank cannon in a ventral pod, and the rare B-3 version a weapon of 75 mm caliber, the largest ever fitted into an aircraft of this kind.

The scope of the accessory

The package holds the wheels, not the landing gear as a whole, and certainly not the aircraft. The designation weighted means that the tire is cast with a deformation in its lower part, as if the weight of the machine were resting on it. The contact surface is flattened and the side slightly bulged, so the model stops looking as if it were hovering above its base.

Working with the part

The wheels are separated from the casting blocks, cleaned up and glued with cyanoacrylate glue. What is essential is to watch the rotation: the flattening has to point downward and perpendicular to the base, otherwise the impression of a flat tire arises. They are painted separately from the landing gear leg, and only afterward is the whole joined together.

Why the wheels in particular on this machine

On this type the landing gear stayed extended in flight and the wheel covers belonged among the pronounced features of the silhouette. The machine was moreover heavy, armored and operated from muddy field strips on the Eastern Front, so a deformed tire is not just an effect but matches the way the aircraft really stood in service. At the same time it is an area the builder reaches only right at the end and where a botched part is hard to replace.

Intended use

The accessory will be appreciated by a builder putting together a German attack aircraft in 1:48 who wants to improve the impression of a machine standing on the ground. In view of the need for exact seating, it is a part for a more advanced modeler.

FAQ

That the wheel is not cast as a regular cylinder. The bottom is compressed and the side wall pushed out, exactly as rubber behaves under the weight of a machine.

The rotation. The flattening has to point vertically down toward the base, otherwise the model looks as if it had an underinflated tire.

It is not. The set covers the wheels, not the landing gear as a whole. The legs remain those from the original kit.

It carried a cannon of 75 mm caliber, the heaviest weapon installed in an aircraft of this kind, and it was built in only small numbers.
