Four finished model trees from the German maker HEKI, nine to eleven centimeters tall. Uneven height in one box is an advantage here rather than a shortcoming: an orchard in which every tree is the same height immediately gives away on a model that this is production goods. Fruit trees have a shorter trunk and a broader, lower-set crown, because they are shaped by pruning.
The small trees are pushed into a pre-drilled hole or glued by the foot of the trunk. In an orchard plant them in rows at roughly equal spacing, because regularity is exactly what sets an orchard apart from freely grown vegetation. Keep the heights uneven, though, as even planted trees grow at different rates. Add grass under the crown so the transition from the ground is not abrupt.
For builders of rural layouts and dioramas and for modelers fine-tuning the surroundings of buildings. Larger fruit trees also suit the middle of a village green or a spot by a chapel, where such a tree usually stood in a real village. This is modeling material, not a toy. The manufacturer marks its scenery products as unsuitable for children under fifteen.
